Think you know shop class? In the Welding/Fabrication Technology program of choice for students in grades 10 through 12 at Fort Vancouver High School Center for International Studies, there’s math (everything from addition and subtraction to trigonometry) and science (physics, for one), as well as technical skills (want to learn how to read a blueprint or use a micrometer?) and even art. Students learn both theory and practice. Past projects include welding an 18-foot trailer, building a custom bike and constructing a hovercraft, to name just a few.

Welding students also get a boost when it’s time to find opportunities after high school. Some have received welding and machining internship and job offers before even completing the program. Others have taken the American Welding Society’s certified welding test and become credentialed while still enrolled in high school. Graduates also leave the program with Occupational Safety & Health Administrationendorsed safety training and certification.

Vancouver Public Schools has a half-day Welding/Fabrication Technology Magnet Program at Fort Vancouver High School.  The program is free but students must apply to be considered! Applications will open in January for the next school year.  Check out our CTE Know Before You Go podcast with welding teacher Mr. Manosky and industry professional Nate Bowman.
