Routine testing for radon was completed at all VPS schools this spring. Tests in the following schools indicated elevated levels in a limited number of classrooms or areas:
- Hudson’s Bay High School
- Heights Campus
- Martin Luther King Elementary
- VSAA
- Ogden Elementary
After identifying the issues, Vancouver Public Schools took one or more of the following steps to address the elevated levels and then retested:
- Confirming the HVAC system is functioning as intended
- Increasing the speed of exhaust fans
- Increasing number of hours HVAC systems are running
- Increasing fan size on existing radon mitigation systems
The results of the follow-up tests show that average levels are now below the Environmental Protection Agency’s action level in the following areas:
- Hudson’s Bay
- Martin Luther King Elementary
- VSAA
- Ogden
Some areas of Heights Campus remain elevated so we are installing a mitigation system by the end of June in this building. We will continue to monitor and take steps until all levels fall below the Environmental Protection Agency’s action level.

Resultados de pruebas de gas Radón
Esta primavera se realizaron pruebas de rutina para medir los niveles de gas radón en todas las escuelas de VPS. Las pruebas en las siguientes escuelas indicaron altos niveles en un número limitado de salones de clases o áreas:

Después de haber identificado los problemas, el Distrito Escolar “Vancouver Public Schools” (VPS, por sus siglas en inglés) tomó uno o más de los siguientes pasos para reducir los niveles elevados y volvió a realizar las pruebas.
- Confirmar que los sistemas de calefacción, ventilación y aire acondicionado (HVAC, por sus siglas en inglés) estén funcionando correctamente
- Aumentar la velocidad de los extractores de aire
- Aumentar el número de horas que los sistemas “HVAC” están en marcha
- Aumentar el tamaño del ventilador de los sistemas de mitigación de gas radón existentes
Los resultados de las pruebas de seguimiento que se realizaron muestran que los niveles promedio están ahora están por debajo del nivel de acción de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental en las siguientes áreas:
- Escuela Preparatoria Hudson’s Bay
- Escuela Primaria Martin Luther King
- Escuela VSAA (Vancouver School of Arts and Academics)

- Увеличение скорости вытяжных вентиляторов
- Увеличение количества часов работы системы HVAC
- Увеличение размера вентиляторов в имеющихся системах снижения уровня радона
Результаты последующих тестов показали, что в следующих школах средние уровни радона в настоящее время ниже уровня, на котором согласно Агентству по защите окружающей среды требуется принимать меры:

- Начальная школа Martin Luther King
- Ванкуверская школа науки и искусства (VSAA)
- Начальная школа Ogden
В некоторых помещениях школы Heights уровень остаётся повышенным, поэтому к концу июня мы устанавливаем в этом здании систему снижения уровня радона. Мы будем продолжать следить за уровнем и принимать шаги до тех пор, пока уровень во всех помещениях не упадёт ниже уровня, на котором согласно Агентству по защите окружающей среды требуется принимать специальные меры по снижению.
